September Birding at Shawangunk Grasslands

Join the Catskill Center's Finn Parnell for a guided morning walk through the Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge, one of the region's best spots for grassland birding.

Date: Friday, September 18, 2026

Time: 9:00 AM–11:00 AM

Location: (Parking details will be shared once registration is complete)

Difficulty: Easy

Distance: Approximately 1 Mile Round Trip

Explore this unique landscape while searching for grassland birds such as the Cedar Waxwing and other seasonal species. Along the way, Finn will share tips for identifying birds by sight and sound, as well as demonstrate how to use mobile apps to enhance your birding experience.

Please bring plenty of water, snacks, and binoculars if you have them. A limited number of binoculars will be available to borrow.

Please note: This location offers limited shade, so expect direct sun exposure for much of the walk. The observation area and facilities at Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge are ADA-accessible, offering a flat, easy path. However, the 3.6 miles of interconnected loop trails are unimproved dirt and grass and are not fully ADA-compliant.

Please note: Pets are not permitted at the preserve. Service dogs are welcome in all areas of the preserve that are open to the public.

In the event of inclement weather, the walk will be canceled.

This is a free event but advance registration is required. Registration closes 24 hours before the event.

If you have any questions, please email Finn Parnell at fparnell@catskillcenter.org.
