January Owl Watch at Shawangunk Grasslands

Join the Catskill Center's Finn Parnell for an owl watch at the Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge, one of the region's best spots for viewing Short-eared owls and other raptors.

Date: Thursday, January 21, 2026

Time: 3:30 PM–4:30 PM

Location: (Parking details will be shared once registration is complete)

Difficulty: Easy

Experience the beauty of the grasslands as we watch for Short-eared Owls and other seasonal raptors. Finn will share identification tips, interesting facts about these birds, and insights into the unique habitat they depend on.

What to Bring: Dress warmly in multiple layers, including a winter coat, hat, gloves, and warm footwear. Bring a hot beverage, such as tea or hot chocolate, and binoculars if you have them. A limited number of binoculars will be available to borrow.

Important Information: This is a primarily stationary wildlife observation program, with participants spending most of the hour standing outdoors. The grasslands are open and exposed to wind, so temperatures can feel significantly colder than expected. Please dress warmly!

Accessibility: The observation area and facilities at Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge are ADA-accessible, with a flat, easy path and a ramp leading to the viewing platform. The refuge's 3.6 miles of interconnected loop trails are unimproved dirt and grass and are not fully ADA-accessible.

Please note: Pets are not permitted at the preserve. Service dogs are welcome in all areas of the preserve that are open to the public.

In the event of inclement weather, the walk will be canceled.

This is a free event but advance registration is required. Registration closes 24 hours before the event.

If you have any questions, please email Finn Parnell at fparnell@catskillcenter.org.
