Catskill Center Lecture on "Placelessness"

The "Retail Landscape" exhibition at the Erpf Gallery by photographer Drew Harty has generated a mix of reactions that center on our feelings about the qualities of the places we live. The exhibit's location in the center of the Catskills creates an odd juxtaposition between the placelessness of the suburban landscape and the preserved character of the Catskill Park. In contemplating the subject of his work, Harty recognizes how we've grown numb to the ubiquity of the retail landscape and we are detached from the rapid change in our communities. He then asks us, what have we gained from this change and what have we lost?

You are invited to join Peter Manning, Catskill Center Regional Planner, on Friday, November 30, 2007 at 5:00 PM, who will address these questions. Peter will draw upon a range of topics in his presentation, including land use planning, art history, and personal experience -- all of which are designed to encourage dialogue about the role we have in shaping the places we live. It is hoped that the discussion following the presentation will inform continued actions that promote and sustain the sense of place in the Catskills.
