Sidney Center Gets Beautification Grant
Sidney Center - The Catskill Center for Conservation and Development recently announced that the Maywood Historical Group in Sidney Center was the recipient of a small grant designed to beautify the community’s Main Street. The grant was made possible through funding provided by Senator John J. Bonacic, and is intended to help communities with small, attainable "bricks and mortar" projects designed to beautify their downtowns, market & advertise Main Street businesses, provide public amenities, make their downtown more pedestrian friendly, and more.
The Maywood Historical Group requested the funding to plant 30 flower barrels along Main Street on behalf of the Sidney Center Improvement Group. The flower barrels were planted on Memorial Day Weekend by several volunteers, and the project came about as a direct result of a "community visioning workshop" facilitated by The Catskill Center earlier in the month. Other project ideas generated at the workshop that are now being pursued by the group include increased code enforcement, establishing a neighborhood watch to combat crime and vandalism in the community, and enhancing a town-owned ball field in the center of town.
Helen Budrock, Assistant Director of The Catskill Center said, "Our Main Street work is an important part of what we do. This seed grant will help compliment some of the technical assistance we have been providing to the community over the past few months."
