Project WISE Comes to Catskills

Fourth-grade students from South Kortright Central School and P.S. 133 in Queens met June 13 and 14 in the culmination of a year-long watershed study. Called Project WISE (Watershed Inspired Science Education), the two classes worked together on several projects throughout the year.

In the fall, students participated in Project WET and Ways of the Watershed, two projects aimed at a deeper understanding of the Watershed. They also entered the Water Conservation Art and Poetry Contest, sponsored by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), which is designed to get students thinking about water conservation. The students paired up as pen pals and communicated regularly through the year.

In April, the students from South Kortright traveled to New York City where they visited the Central Park Reservoir with DEP staff. They also visited Highbridge Park where the Old Croton Aqueduct entered New York City carrying water from the first Croton Reservoir in Westchester County.

This project was made possible through a grant program which has represented a successful partnership between the Catskill Center for Conservation and Development, the Watershed Agricultural Council, the USDA Forest Service and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.

An Education Grant from the Catskill Watershed Corporation awarded this spring will enable the South Kortright-PS 133 relationship, fostered by teachers Gloria Anderson and Pat Ryan, to continue in the 2005-2006 school year.
