Now you will enter the Catskill Forest Preserve. The Forest Preserve was established in 1885. It is a unique forest preserve that is protected by the New York State Constitution, which states that the land "shall be forever kept as wild forest lands. They shall not be leased, sold or exchanged, or be taken by any corporation, public or private, nor shall the timber thereon be sold, removed or destroyed."

On the left side of the trail, you will see a clearing through some hemlock trees, feel free to investigate this hidden treasure. It is one of the many bluestone quarries in the area. The bluestone industry prospered in the Catskills during the mid 1800’s. The stone was used for sidewalks all over the World. One can just imagine how difficult it must have been to cut away the rock and then transport such heavy loads with horses and wagons down mountain roads into the Hudson Valley.

After visiting the quarry, and returning to the marked trail, you will come to a trail junction with signs for some other beautiful trails in the area. If you have the time and energy, you may want to explore the Devil’s Path from here up to Indian Head Mountain.

We have now reached our destination, the Devil’s Kitchen lean-to, located about 1.2 miles from the trailhead. This is one of many lean-to’s which have been built along the trails to provide shelter for primitive camping opportunities. We will turn around here, but some hikers proceed on for another 3 miles or more to Echo Lake and Overlook Mountain.
