At this resolution streams, roads, and houses cannot be identified, but larger landscape features such as water bodies, wetlands, fields, forests, and developed areas can be outlined. By looking at the ‘signatures’ of reflected light in the satellite images, researchers can make general classifications of vegetation types, agriculture types, intensity of development, etc. Notice in this image the Ashokan Reservoir and Hudson River in blue, the built-up areas of Kingston and Woodstock in yellow and red, and forested areas in three shades of green. Golf courses are bright green; wetlands are light blue. Agricultural lands, in orange and brown, closely follow the lower Esopus valley.
