The Catskill Mountain region lies primarily within Delaware, Greene, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan, and Ulster Counties in southeastern New York State. The Catskill mountains are often termed ‘America’s First Wilderness’, and they have a long and colorful history. The region was the setting for the adventures of native Americans, European explorers, hunters, trappers, and settlers, artists, writers, fishermen, vacationers, entrepreneurs; people who exploited the land, and people who revered the land. The region is known for it’s rugged, rocky terrain, numerous mountains, valleys, streams, and waterfalls, wild forests, and independent, creative people. The two most prominent features of the Catskill region today, are the nearly 300,000 acres of public Forest Preserve land located largely within the Catskill Park, and the 1,584 sq mile Catskill/Delaware portion of the New York City drinking water supply area.
