According to the Census Bureau, on average families in the six-county Catskill region earned $27,400 in 1989 which is about 15% below the state average of $32,965. Ulster County had the highest average income ($34,033) while Delaware County had the lowest ($24,132).

As the accompanying map illustrates, the southeastern Catskills (encompassing parts of Sullivan, Ulster and Greene Counties) exhibit the highest average incomes, while the central and northern Catskills exhibit lower incomes. Towns with the highest median household incomes include Gardiner, Hurley and Lloyd in Ulster County.
