CATSKILLS COMMUNITIES

From remote rural towns like Halcott and Hardenburgh, which have only a few hundred residents, to a mid-sized city like Kingston, the region is a diverse mixture of communities both large and small. As the accompanying map illustrates, the areas with the most dense population are located in the river towns of Ulster and Greene Counties, which follow historic settlement patterns, and towns located on the outskirts of cities or other established population centers. Towns in the central Catskills, like Hardenburgh, Denning and others, have the smallest populations due to their remote location, limited accessibility, and the fact that a significant portion of their land area is owned by the State of New York as forever wild forest preserve.
